God’s desire for a diverse church means that cultural identity matters in ministry, but our stories are complex. Our relationship to language, ethnicity, family, and other components of cultural identity are multilayered and understanding them takes work.

In this course, Dr. Michelle Ami Reyes looks at the cultural dissonances that exist between first, second, and third generation immigrants, and invites the students to reflect on these personally and in congregational settings with the purpose of creating ministry practices that celebrate different cultural identities.

Course Objectives

By the completion of this course, the students will be able to

Write a cultural autobiography that reflects on ethnicity, nationality, family migration history, and language.
Record migrant history for their church community.
Create a plan for congregational practices that celebrate cultural stories.

This course will require approximately three hours to complete.
