In every generation, women and men are called to preach the gospel. The problem is many of us feel ill-equipped for the calling. Busy pastors, everywhere, feel as though they are ineffective and worry whether their sermons can meet the needs of their weary listeners. Those who are lucky enough to receive some training are taught to either ignore or set aside their cultural experiences and traditions.

Drawing from the perspectives of Black and Latina/o preaching traditions, this course will guide preachers to proclaim and apply the gospel in and for local communities. In this course, students will learn strategies for assessing the spiritual and theological needs of their community, interpreting scripture, and developing effective sermons.

Course Objectives:

After completing this course, the students will be able to

Understand preaching and the role of the preacher for the Church and her mission.
Discern and interpret the needs of their community.
Apply principles for Scripture interpretation and effective sermon development for their community.

This course will require approximately six hours to complete.
